Attractions and Things to see in Koprivnica

Within the former military fortress, there are valuable architectural monuments mostly located on Esterova Street and Dr. L. Brozović Square. There is the parish church of St. Nicholas, which was probably built on the foundations of a medieval Franciscan church. It was built in its present form before 1657.

Franciscan Monastery and Church of St. Anthony of Padua hold a truly long history of the Franciscans in Koprivnica. The baroque stone monastery, which adjoined the former earthen ramparts, was built by the Franciscans between 1675 and 1685. The church of St. Anthony is particularly valuable for its baroque inventory and the attached baroque chapel of St. Savior. Within the former military fortress, there are also very valuable baroque sacral columns, which are arranged in the park of Dr. L. Brozović Square.

On the eastern side of Esterova Street, near the Church of St. Nicholas, there are several valuable baroque and historicist houses and palaces. Primarily, there is the baroque city palace, probably built after 1765. It belongs to the Sulimanović family and a museum was established here, with the city coat of arms carved above the entrance portal.

In Nemčićeva Street, it is worth seeing the bourgeois baroque house, followed by the building of the Koprivnica sub-county (a work by Carnelutti from the late 19th century), the historicist ground-floor house and the Biedermeier ground-floor house (where the famous croatian writer Antun Nemčić Gostovinski lived). Next to the park in Nemčićeva Street, there is the Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity (made in baroque style, built in 1794).

Koprivnica History

Koprivnica got its name from the Koprivnica River mentioned in the documents of Croatian-Hungarian King Andrew II of the House of Árpád from 1207., 1209. and 1217. The settlement is first mentioned in 1272. in the donation of ten-year-old Prince Ladislaus IV of Kuman to the castellan and knight of Koprivnica fortress, Bakaler.

The first written traces of settlement in that area date back to the ancient period when Illyrians inhabited the territory. Later, Romans and Avars passed through the area that is now Koprivnica. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Koprivnica was an important trading center. The town was known for its production and trade of grain, wine, horses, and other agricultural products.

Many buildings and houses were constructed during this period, and some of them can still be seen in the old part of the city. The most significant moment in the history of Koprivnica is linked to its industrial development. In the second half of the 19th century, a railway station was opened, enabling faster and easier transportation of goods and passengers.

Simultaneously, the first tobacco factory in the town, named “Prva koprivnička tvornica duhana,” was established. This factory became a symbol of Koprivnica’s industrial development and attracted the workforce from other parts of Croatia.

In the 20th century, Koprivnica continued to evolve as an industrial center. In addition to the tobacco factory, Podravka, a well-known food company, was founded and became one of the largest employers in the region. The town was also known for the production of textiles, machinery, and other industrial products.
